Kyushu Jangara Ramen in Harajuku

The highest calibur ramen in Tokyo

Take shelter in Harajuku's Kyushu Jangara Ramen, one of the most famous noodle chains in the country the, specializing in Kyushu version of Japan's famous soup. Kyushu is the southernmost of the four main islands that make up Japan, and it is home to their famous creation, tonkotsu ramen.

Traditional toppings that you should consider trying include chopped green onions, spicy cod roe, slices of pork, seaweed, and a boiled egg, among others. All of this is just the icing on the cake because the thin noodles bathed in the rich tonkotsu soup is what will really grab your taste buds' attention. If meat is not your thing, rest assured that the store also offers a satisfying vegan option or two.

The noodles at Kyushu Jangara are tender, the pork well seasoned, and the broth rich and complex. Some ramen places in Tokyo just go through the motions, but not here. The atmosphere inside is playful and hip, making this a great place to hang out with friends while having a beer.

You can tell that Jangara is popular just by looking at the long queues that occupy the entrance every day. I would recommend that you try to get a head start and arrive before 11:30am. There are in fact two floors to this particular branch so be sure to go upstairs if you want to order the large portion (just say "Ohmori"). With such quality food the price is a bargain at around 700 yen per bowl of tonkotsu goodness. Whatever you decide to choose from their delicious menu, you will be hard pressed to find something you won’t like.
